Jodeling Videos

The children's choir (Kinderjodlercheerlie Brisablick from Stans-Oberdorf) were not part of the yodeling competition, but they won my heart. They performed as part of the Friday evening entertainment.

This is a mixed choir performing in the church at Dagmersellen. Sorry about the obscured view from a lady with white hair sitting in front of us. It's just one small indication of how crowded it was! It gives you an idea of the yodeling and how beautiful the church was.

This is a lovely sister duet from Kerns. We were lucky enough to chat with their parents who were sitting behind us at the competition. The girls were accompanied by an accordion player (as were several of the groups)

Finally, a three-part women's group that needs a bit of explanation. The big wooden structure you see in the video is the judge's stand. Each of the competition rooms had a platform above the crowd for the three judges. We were lucky to get a seat anywhere, but it does obstruct the view a bit.

Each of the performances contained three verses that told the story of the song. Each verse was followed by a chorus of yodeling. Only the top voice yodels while the lower voices support with harmony. These videos have been edited to just show one verse and one chorus.

The video is a little jumpy, but it does focus (eventually) on one of the women yodeling on the chorus. Notice the position of her mouth as she yodels. By the way, hands in pockets is the custom. It's so enigmatic that even television commercials and advertisements reference it. When I asked my teacher why they did this, she just shrugged and indicated "why not?"

The next entry will probably be some videos and photos of alphorns and flags from Dagmersellen.
